Cyber Security Public Awareness

Cyber attacks on American businesses, consumers, government agencies, and critical infrastructure have dramatically increased in recent years. However, the American people have not been provided appropriate information. The Cyber Security Public Awareness Act would enhance public awareness by instituting new reporting requirements on cyber threats. The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense would be required to submit annual reports to Congress on attacks on federal networks; the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation would be required to submit annual reports on investigations of cyber crime; and the Department of Homeland Security would be required to report on other impediments to appropriate public awareness of common cyber security threats.

LinkedIn-invite: non-competition clause breached

By accepting an invite to connect on LinkedIn, a Dutch employee was charged with a fine of EUR 10,000 by a Dutch judge. The case dealt with a former employee of an IT company who accepted an LinkedIn-invite of a relation of the former employer. The non-competition clause signed by the employee included the formal restriction of contacts with relations of the former employer.

Social media – hurting democracy & companies?

This NATO Review states that “it would be rash to conclude that the rise of social media is a win-win situation for the West, and for the spread of democracy. As much as companies have been able to reap the benefits of social networks as markets, the 2010 Sophos Security Threat Report found that more than 60% of businesses believe that Facebook is a threat to their security. Social platforms draw in cybercriminals seeking to make a fast target of unwary users”.

Rabobank: lek rekeninggegevens

Door een storing na onderhoudswerkzaamheden aan internetbankieren konden circa 900 klanten van de Rabobank de rekeninggegevens van anderen inzien. De Rabobank verklaarde: “Dat gegevens van andere klanten korte tijd zichtbaar zijn geweest, hoort niet te gebeuren”. Meteen na melding van de storing is het probleem vastgesteld en opgelost. Door het opnieuw opstarten was internetbankieren tijdelijk niet beschikbaar.

Angst voor onbewust lekken groter dan voor hackaanval

De angst voor het onbewust lekken van bedrijfsvertrouwelijke informatie door (interne) medewerkers is groter dan de angst voor een bewuste hackaanval van buiten de organisatie, zo blijkt uit een onderzoek uitgevoerd door de Health Care Compliance Association & the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics.
