KPMG: culture and tone critical to stamping out internal fraud

The UK (albeit public or private sector) is now fighting multiple enemies. The majority of fraud is committed by professional criminals. with fraud perpetrated by criminal gangs rising 107% in the first half of 2011. Internal fraud committed by employees (of all levels of seniority) also did £225 million worth of damage this year (up from £181 million in January-June 2010), with management fraud averaging out at £7.3 million per case and employee fraud around £708,000.

Cyber Security Raad geïnstalleerd

Minister Opstelten van Veiligheid en Justitie heeft vandaag de Cyber Security Raad (CSR) officieel geïnstalleerd. Onder co-voorzitterschap van Eelco Blok (CEO KPN) en Erik Akerboom (NCTb) heeft de Raad de taak om de regering en private partijen gevraagd en ongevraagd adviezen te geven over relevante ontwikkelingen op het gebied van digitale veiligheid.

Biscuit tins against information leakage

German high-tech company Evonik is using biscuit tins to fight the leakage of company confidential information through cell phones. The company develops and produces advanced battery systems for electronic cars. The interest in these developments, especially from foreign competitors and intelligence services, is overwhelming and poses a substantial threat to the continuity of the company.

Secret police files leaked through photocopier

A secret police file on Dutch top-criminal Stanley Hillis was leaked to 21 lawyers. The file, containing the incident book on the assassination of Hillis was left unattended on the photocopier and mixed with copies of files on other cases that were sent to the respective lawyers handling these cases. Through these files the confidential information ended up at a number of top-criminals.

F16 fighter jet specs bought at jumble sale

A usb-stick containing specifications on the sale of Dutch F16 fighter jets to Chili was bought at a jumble sale for EUR 1. Besides specifications on the deal (codenamed: Newco Colorado Integrated F16 Support), the usb-stick also contained personal information on the military officials involved in the deal, as well as specs on status and weaknesses of the planes.
